I have the same issue when updating my iPhone 8.
It gets stuck til the battery runs out. I tried to recharge and turn it on but it gets stuck again.
Then I tried the TunesKit iOS System Recovery, somehow it solves the problem. I can reboot my phone again now and hopefully this helps.

Yes, you must be running at least iOS 2 I believe to use the App Store. Many apps will not support such an old version of iOS your phone is running so I would suggest updating to iOS 3 (the latest software the original iPhone can run) so you have more compatibility.
