No, The thermostat just causes the cooling water to get to operating temperature faster. It restricts coolant flow to the radiator until it opens. However, if you replaced the coolant with plain water when this was removed, that could have caused the problem. Plain tap water in an engine, especially one with an aluminum block, may cause a chemical reaction and cause internal damage. Antifreeze helps to prevent this and provides lubrication to the water pump.

Does it cause any problems if you dont change your thermostat?

If your thermostat is faulty and not opening at the correct temperature, the coolant will not circulate through the radiator, and the engine will rapidly overheat. This could cause considerable damage to the engine. If the thermostat is opening early, ie, before the engine has reached optimum temperature, it is not such a big deal except that, on a cold day, you might have trouble getting much heat in the car for a time, and the engine won't run at its best efficiency. This can also cause excess engine wear by running it too cold.In any case, if the thermostat does not open at all, you could sieze the engine (very costly - usually means a new engine @$3500.00), or you will blow the head gasket (also very costly @$1200.00). Best to get it checked and/or replaced.

locate the upper radiator hose. follow it from the top right side of the radiator to the engine block. remove the hose from that block , then remove three screws so that little block can be removed where you'll find the thermostat inside. clean the old gasket off both sides of the thermostat housing, replace the thermostat and gasket... dont forget to use a sealant around the edges of the block and the thermostat housing before securing
