If what you have is a stock 350 with a stock intake manifold and no other modifications other than the cam, you are probably around 300 horses. To make some changes that will enhance the cams potential, you will need to do some additional things. First, if you can't recurve the distributor yourself, have a shop do it. with that cam I would aim for limiting total mechanical advance to about 20 degrees and I would use springs and weights that will make the distributor hit maximum advance at about 2400-2500 RPM. Then I would set the initial timing at 15-16 degrees. Small block chevies seem to do best with a total of 36 degrees total advance. I would also set the vacuum to the distributor so it is manifold vacuum, not ported vacuum,..That way, there is always vacuum advance and that will greatly enhance low and mid RPM performance at part throttle. The next thing that I would do is add an exhaust system that increases flow. A lot of people don't like headers, but I strongly believe their advance far and away outweighs the hassles that they can cause you. The next thing that I would do is to get a dual plane performance intake manifold, and run a500CFM Edelbrock or Qjet carb on it. With these cahanges, you are probably in the 375-400 horsepower range. I warn you, if this is not a serious performance motor, the correct cam will make the car impossible to drive on the street. Tunnel rams are for real race cars, which run better with a single carb, anyway, or a trailer queen, which is all show, and no go. The best cam will idle at aboput 2000 rpms. Will not run at all under 3000 rpms,. will need low rear gears or it will not start out from a light, and a high stall converter. And, you will have to rev the motor to 7500 rpms, to make power. Having said all of this, I would run 2 660 Holley center squirters, mounted sideways, on a Pro Ram. The old "shoebox" tunnels are worthless. You are going to need a barometer, and a vaccuum gauge to set these up, DAILY. You are going to want a lot of lift, and duration, with very aggressive valve timing, and a lot of advance built in. I would advise you to contact LUNATI. They have the most helpful staff, and the best grinds available. I do not run anything else.

YES, the 5A heads FROM A 307 can be installed on a 403. The307 heads are a BETERR choice than the 67 to 72 Olds 350 heads. The 307 heads have similar sized intake & exhaust ports to the stock 403 heads. The 307 heads have a much smaller combustions chamber at arounf 67cc. This alone will raise compression to around 9.5:1. The only down side is the 307 heads have much smaller valves. You really must get larger valves installed into the 307 heads. The stock 403 valves will fit with some machining (of course) and you'll have a high compression 403. Get some port work done while you are at it & a little polishing too. Buy a new intake & have it machine & port matched to the intake & a middle of the road Lunati cam. This will result in a 403 producing around 330 HP.
