I have an 86 S-10 with a 2.5 gas engine It has timing gears There is a knocking noise from the bottom of the timing gear cover that sounds like loose valves but from the place car runs ok -any ideas?

Timing chain worn out. Replace the chain and drive gears.

Check the engine timing first. Pinging or knocking,especially under acceleration could be early detenation caused by advanced timing.

If it's knocking when accelerating, the engine could be starving for the correct octane fuel ... try the mid-grade or premium fuel and see if it still occurs. Could also be that the timing belt needs to be adjusted/replaced. If the knocking sounds like metal on metal, chances are you are in for a bigger bill for a possible engine rebuild. At any rate, have it checked out by a mechanic soon.

This sounds like a timing problem. If the engine is an interference type and the belt/chain has slipped or broken, there will be major damage to the valves and pistons. If it is a non-interference type, you might simply need to replace the belt/chain, and/or tensioners, but the engine timing will need to be realigned.
