I think the Christian religions (Christianity, Catholicism, Mormonism, and Jehovah's Withess) would agree that you should study at least the basic beliefs and history of each one, take time to attend worship services with each one, and then pray to God and ask Him to direct you to the truth. "Christianity" is broken down into many smaller groups (Presbyterians, Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, etc) and so you may even want to look at each of those as well. Another idea would be to read through the Bible and make a list of all the things that might be found in God's true church, and then find a church that has all or most of those aspects.

Buddhism, however, doesn't necessarily have a god. Although you could go through the same process of seeking direction through prayer, a Buddhist might suggest you meditate and think on it to decide if it is the correct path for you.

Catholic AnswerI can only answer for the Catholic religion. Beginning with Judaism, we believe that God revealed Himself all through history, starting with Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and the prophets, gradually leading His people to the point where they could recognize and understand His Son, when He arrived. We believe that when God arrived on earth, as a human being - Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, He was the final - and full revelation of God - of Himself - to mankind. He fulfilled all of the hundreds and hundreds of prophecies about Him in the Old Testament, and 1) told us how to live so that we could attain eternal happiness in heaven with Him, and 2) sacrificed Himself, in the most gruesome, painful, humiliating way on the Cross for our salvation. Starting with Judaism, and then, with Our Blessed Lord, Catholicism has been the ONLY religion - for thousands of years - which has even attempted to make this claim. And it has survived - by the grace of God, and His promise, despite all of the sin, wars, selfishnesses, and other "religions" which have arisen over the centuries - only Catholicism remains unchanged, preaching the same God, the same message, and still calling man to repentance, and offering him grace and salvation.

In addition to the history and "arguments" if you will, I am now approaching 60 years of age, I write this answer on a laptop in a Benedictine monastery where I have been on retreat for the last week. I can assure you from the bottom of my heart that God's message, and His Love, and His Grace, to deny myself, and go out to do His Will are all very real. But I think you can only come to this revelation, outside of some extraordinary revelation not usually given to men, by sincerely praying and trying it. That, at least, is the answer of one aging man who has given his life to God, and not been disappointed.
