: Over the years the exact wording has changed. President Lincoln stated that the North was fighting to preserve the Union. In order to do that, this meant all states had to remain within the Union. No state could exercise its right to secede. If it did, Lincoln envisioned a splintering of America into a bunch of petty states and kingdoms, much like what Germany was before Bismarck unified it.

The South was fighting for their freedom and for continuity of slavery. The North was fighting for the emancipation of slavery. The Southern states surrendered to the North in April 1865 and the Confederate States of America dissolved.

Primarily to keep the Union together and not let the States split. The Union (or the North) beleived that the Southern States did not have the right to leave the Union. That point of law has been debated for a long time.
The North were free states and the South were slave states.
It was constitutional because the North was fighting for the "equal rights That's what the fight was about. The southern states thought since they had voluntarily accepted the Constitution they had the right to reject it when they did not agree with the federal government. The northern states disagreed.
