It depends if it is a 4 wheel drive truck. A rear driveshaft is used to drive the rear axle. A front driveshaft is used to drive the front axle on a 4X4.

AnswerCheck the crank pully bolt. If it has come loose you will have a leak.The crank pully bolt does not have anything to do with the crank shaft seal leak. Thebolt is independent of the seal. To replace seal remove crank shaft pully and you will have access to crank shaft seal, pull out & replace seal.
You could do it but it would be much cheaper to just buy a good used 1990 GMC 4+4 truck and drive it.

No. For one, the transmission from the 96 will be electronically controlled, vs. the mechanically controlled transmission in the 1990.

many things. flywheel, transmission, shifter linkage, wiring if any since most newer autos are computer controlled. possibly starter depending on flywheel. you may need a longer or shorter drive shaft and the yoke for the drive shaft will be different. you may even need a different crossmember for the trans mission support.
you can replace power stering pump without moveing drive shaft but its fiddly. to remove drive shaft undo 30mm nut in centre,undo bottom ball joint and pull strut out of way be ready to catch gear box oil.
