Could possibly be a messed up vacuum hose. Not sure where it is located.
An engine revs when you hold down the gas and the brakes at the same time. ~Ares
It could be the throttle position sensor.. Mine SVX had the same problem but if you want to get a quick fix, try this: Start engine Put to reverse Give it some revs AND WATCH THERES NOTHING BEHIND YOU!!! It just might jump back to its place, mine did. And you might want to check the trnsmission oils etc..
Because that's how an engine runs. it can only ever rev up if you give it gas. no gas, no revs. more gas, more revs
What revs should my audi 1.6 show at seventy miles an hour and how many revs should it show when ticking over
The most likely cause is a stopped up fuel filter. Replace it and if that doesn't do it, check the fuel pump preasure. If ok, it could be a stopped up cat convertor.
Every time you engage the clutch, the clutch disengages from the transmission/engine. Which in term engine revs up, until you disengage the clutch.
Pro: you are able to change gear when your engine revs are different from your transmission revs. Con: when torque is high or the difference in revs (see above) is too big, it will slip.

The reverse is "shot" on your transmission. You'll need to either rebuild/replace the transmission or get another vehicle.
Try checking the transmission fluid.
