Abraham Lincoln did win the necessary votes in the Electoral College to placed him in the US presidency. That Electoral vote he won by a landslide. With that said, Lincoln only won by 41% or so of the popular vote. Since he was running against "three Democrats", his election was a solid one and a blunder by the national Democrats. His views on not fostering the spread of slavery to the western territories was not shared and faced constitutional hurdles.
