Germany, Austria, and Turkey, sort of, against France (which Germany dearly loved to invade) and the United Kingdom, including some Canadians and Australians.
Both sides fought so hard in Belgium and the near part of France that they were totally exhausted. So they 'dug in', building trenches to live in, and occupying existing buildings. The result of that was that neither side went anywhere. This part of the war was referred to as the 'Western Front.' In 1918, the Americans joined the war, and through the magnificent strategy of General Pershing, whose greatest achievements were in keeping the American troops from joining the British or French in the trenches, and in realizing that tanks were a powerful new weapon when used alongside the infantry.
