Many prophecies have been fulfilled. A few examples:

  • The vast empires of the Caucasian peoples (Genesis 9:27), including the empires of Alexander, the Romans, Russia and America.
  • The fact that Abraham is revered to this day, close to 4,000 years after his lifetime (Genesis 12:2).
  • God having fulfilled his promise (Genesis 35:12) to give Israel (Canaan) to Jacob's descendants.
  • The fact that the Arabs are very numerous (Genesis 17:20).
  • The Edumeans having been subjugated by the Israelites (see Genesis 25:23 and 1 Kings 22:48).
  • The fact that Edom (Petra) is today an uninhabited desert (Jeremiah 49:17-18).
  • The existence of the Davidic dynasty (Genesis 49:8-10) and its splitting (1 Kings 11:11-13).
  • The destruction of the Temple (1 Kings 9:7).
  • The scattering of the Jews (Deuteronomy 4:27).
  • The destruction of Babylon (Isaiah 13:19).
  • The hatred against the Jews, and the canards that have been hurled at them (Deuteronomy 28:37).
  • The fact that the Jews continue to exist despite their exile (Leviticus 26:44).
  • The fact that billions of people have come under the influence of the Abrahamic belief, with the Greek, Norse and Roman gods now long-defunct. This is an (as yet) partial fulfillment of Isaiah 2:18.

Other prophecies are being fulfilled even now. A couple of examples are the mass return of Jews to Israel (Deuteronomy 30:3-5), and the fact that Israel is considered a significant force in the Middle East, with a number of victories (see Micah 5:7).

Is it possible to put an end to a prophecy?

AnswerIs it possible to cause a prophecy not to come true? Of course. Actually, many biblical prophecies have never come true. Or as some Christians assert, have not yet occurred. So, if you think something has been prophesied but has not yet occurred, perhpas it never will. In any case, you can simply remove the context in which it could occur, and then you know it will never occur.AnswerFor true prophecies, not completely. The prophecy that is fulfilled always remains exactly that - fulfilled prophecy. Others are still pending or may be in the process of being fulfilled.

What is the importance of the Old Testament's prophets?

AnswerThe Old Testament Prophets are important because they tell us of the geneology of Jesus Christ, and they reveal His identity as the Messiah. What are the prophicies that must be fulfilled before Jesus takes the Christians to heaven?

There are many prophecies of Jesus before he returns, and mostly of trouble; that's why he said: And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved . (Matthew 10.22) You may read about these many terrible prophecies in the book of Revelation

Where in Hebrew texts is prophecy limited to be fulfilled during the life of the prophet?

It's often not the case the prophecy must be fulfilled within the lifetime of the prophet since the Messianic prophecies have not be fulfilled to this day. (Christians will argue that a subset of the prophecies have not yet been fulfilled and will be fulfilled when Christ returns.) However, if a prophet believes that he will be alive to see the prophecy come true, he usually announces as much. For example, Moses would perform prophetic miracles right in front of adversaries and kinsmen alike. Isaiah prophesied that a young boy would soon be born to a then-pregnant woman and would be named Emmanuel and this happened in the subsequent few months (because you can only be pregnant for so long). As a result, when prophecy is supposed to happen soon, the prophet will usually indicate as much.
