To go from India to the United Kingdom you would have to go North. This is across the world from each other.
West is generally true; however, a true heading of 270 degrees from some parts of Europe isn't going to get you to the USA. Interestingly, the best route from far-northern Europe to far-western USA (Alaska) is actually an initial true heading of north-northeast - the short "great circle route" over the north pole - where compass headings don't mean much. At the north pole, there's only one direction - south - so you need a little more information to get to where you are going.
Head East, its got to be out there somewhere.
