Believe it or not, the first troops into Vietnam were not conventional troops. They were actually the Green Berets, or the 10th Special Operations Forces. They were there to train the South Vietnamese to fight the Guerrilla Vietcong in South Vietnam. They first went in country in the 1950's.

The South Vietnamese Army surrendered in April of '75. South Vietnam was a defeated nation in April '75. The victorious Northern troops were stationed through out the new country of Vietnam (there was no more N. or S. Vietnam after '75).

Vietnamization
The mission of President Nixon's Vietnamization plan was to have the South Vietnamese troops do more of the fighting, with the ultimate goal being the eventual removal of American troops from the country. The Vietnam War lasted from 1955 to 1975.

The Vietnamese War ended in 1975 when NVA troops entered and captured South Vietnam's capital, Saigon
The North Vietnamese Government tried to unite the country, but South Vietnam resisted. When North Vietnam sent combat troops and propagation 'cadre' into the South to persuade them to surrender, the U.S. and other allies came into the country to defend the South against Communism. Because of popular sentiment against the war, the U.S. withdrew all troops by April, 1973 - leaving the South Vietnamese Army to fight for themselves. Within two years, Saigon (the South Vietnam capital) fell to Communist North Vietnamese forces, and the country was unified, making HaNoi in North Vietnam the nation's capital.
The plan for the gradual removal of American troops from south Vietnam was called Vietnamization. South Vietnamese troops were trained to use American arms and materiel to protect their country.
The us slowly pulled the troops out and handed the fighting over to the south vietnamese army
