This is unlikely to be true. For a start, in 1973 the EU did not exist. The European Economic Community (EEC), also known as the Common Market, was the union of the time. The EU succeeded the EEC in 1993. Secondly, there would be no advantage to Australia and New Zealand applying to join. Being literally on the opposite of the world, there would be little benefit to membership. Research has not uncovered the occurrence of any such event.
