Buddhism seems to have become a religion today and has millions of followers around the world. Probably when the Buddha created Buddhism, it was a way of life under Hinduism. The Buddha himself, when he was prince Siddhartha Gautama, advocated that we should live a life of peace, of bliss, of joy, a life of detachment. He taught how to live without attachment and therefore to overcome dukkha or suffering. He was against following certain rituals and beliefs in the Caste System or in idol worship. Unfortunately, what Buddha prescribed as a way of life or as Buddha philosophy has today transformed into Buddhism, into a religion, and it contradicts many of the Buddha's teachings.

Buddhism is a Philosophy. That is the reason why people of all faiths and no faiths practices it.

It depends on how you define religion. Zen Buddhism was first introduced to the U.S. at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago 1893; for the last 40 years it has been introduced in College Comparative Religion courses as a World Religion via the Huston Smith book, The World's Religions and it is legally protected as a religion in this country.
