The United Kingdom is a country of Western Europe comprising England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Beginning with the kingdom of England, it was created by three acts of union: with Wales (1536), Scotland (1707), and Ireland (1800). At the height of its power in the 19th century it ruled an empire that spanned the globe. London is the capital and the largest city. Population: 60,600,000. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is often abbreviated to "Great Britain" or just "Britain" in this sense they are the same thing.

Great Britain is the name of an island, the largest island within the United Kingdom. Britain is a term that can loosely be applied to mean Great Britain or United Kingdom. Normally we would say Britain when we are referring to the country of the UK, rather than having a discussion about the island of Great Britain, so under normal circumstances the two are not used interchangeably, and are not the same.

Yes, in practice.

Although Britain (from the roman Britannia) refers to only England and Wales. The term Great Britain comes from the Act of Union 1707 and refers to England, Wales and Scotland. Passports are issued for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
