A LAN(local area network) and WAN(wide area network). Yes, the difference is the geography of the network.

If you have a network in a room that's a LAN now if you want to connect to a building down the street you cant run a network cable down the road you have to go through a ISP(internet service provider) that would be considered a WAN.
