No, New York is considered part of the middle colonies, along with Pennslyvania, Delaware, and New Jersey. The New England colonies were New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. (Later New England states include Vermont and Maine.)
Answeradd the south colony states were Maryland Virginia n. and s. Carolina + GeorgiaActually, it is much more gray than a simple yes or no. To die hard Massachusettans, NY will never be part of New England. This is because, once upon a time, New York and Jersey were considered New England (Connecticut puritans solidified the ties between them and their southern neighbors but setting up Puritan colonies such as Salem, NJ)... then New York City became a larger, more important, and better city than Boston. Bostonians became bitter and from then on excluded NY. Because one must travel through NY to get to NJ, NJ was excluded as well. Today, many consider upstate NY part of NE, they themselves do--at least, most people in northeast NY near the VT border are more New England oriented and gravitate towards Boston teams (they actually live closer to Boston). However, Connecticut, usually considered part of NE, is much more New York oriented than NE oriented (more than half the population roots for NY teams). People in MA sometimes do not consider CT as part of New England because of its strong ties to New York. Additionally, Connecticutians (mostly west of the CT River) sometimes do not consider themselves New Englanders, but rather Tri-Staters (referring to the NY-NJ-CT metro area). In the early days, CT was actually part of the Dutch's New Netherlands Colony before it was ever part of New England. Everything west of the Connecticut River was part of the Dutch Colony centered around New Amsterdam, now New York City. In the short time between Dutch and English rule, the same area in CT was once considered part of New York (west of the CT River), and therefore a middle colony. Because of CT's early (and modern) ties to New York City, it is even at times called a Mid-Atlantic state. In this day and age, it makes more sense that upstate NY be considered part of NE and western CT not.
Not any more. Massachusetts is a state in the region of the US called New England. It is sometimes called a 'commonwealth', part of its official name. This doesn't restrict or enhance its position or authority among the other 49 states.
