It depends on what fills you with awe - the extent of the universe, the development of the human race are obvious. It depends on your perspective if a people who had an empire stretching from Libya to Central Asia fills you with awe, or it is just an interesting phase in the long, slow development of civilisation in one part of the world.
I certainly believe that Persia is worthy of awe. It was an incredibly advanced and noble civilization. It was first empire to truly embrace the concept of regional cultures and the idea of unity in diversity. It created beautiful architectural models, traded in finery, gold, and peace. If only the current incarnation of Persians had a government to match this incredible historic legacy.
