Pick the ranger. The ranger is way lighter than the explorer. Stuff a V8 in it later on. Theres alot more modifications that can be done to an older ranger than the explorer. First thing youll want to do is get big tires I just know it. So go to your junkyard and find a 1993-1997 ranger 4X4 and rip out the Dana 35. The Front axle assembly. Its a 2 piece axle though just so yah know. Its a hell of alot stronger than the Old Dana 28, which is in that 1989 ranger. You can run 35's on it with no problem.

can you use a transmission from a 1993 ford ranger in a 2000 ford ranger?
is a 95 automatic 4cyl ford ranger transmission compatible with a 94 ranger 4cyl?
You can get one from any ranger or explorer 94 or below, and it can come fromany 2.9,or 4.0 engine
I'm assuming it would be the same as the 1994 Ford EXPLORER transfer case ( MERCON automatic transmission fluid ) I know that's what my 1995 Ford Explorer uses
It might be in the same place as a Ford Explorer... which is on the Transmission. Mine just went bad on my 1997 Explorer. You can order one from PepBoys for $50, or get them from an online store for $35.
In regards to your question, the clutch assembly should be the same, the only difference mite be the conector for the clutch line which you can change out with one from an explorer then bolt it in and have fun
