The Solara is as good as or better than any car on the market. For starters it's a Toyota which has a sterling reputation for quality (and value). Secondly it's essentially a Camry with all the same running gear, just a different body.
You can find a quieter car and certainly a more powerful car but even if you're shopping in the Lexus/Infiniti/Cadillac/Mercedes realm you won't find anything more reliable.
If you're looking for a convertible, focus on the Gen II Solara (2004 and later) which was specifically designed to go topless with a much stiffer frame/body structure than you'll find on the earlier model.
Cheers
i recently got into a head on accident with a tractor trailer with a Toyota solara, and i walked a way from it with a messed up knee collar bone, and a small puncture to the lung, this is one of the safest cars i would think, now in the snow its pretty crappy, but it saved my life

I dont think that a 2001 Solara has a carburetor. They stopped using them years ago - your car should have a fuel-injection unit.
