  • Pandas are bears, and placental mammals, and koalas are not. Koalas are marsupials, and are not related to bears in any way. They are not "koala bears" - just "koalas".
  • Panda young are called cubs and koalas young are called joeys.
  • Pandas' cubs are born far more developed than koala joeys. Koala joeys are about the size of a bean when born, and must complete their development in the mother's pouch.
  • Koalas live almost exclusively on gum (eucalyptus) leaves and, occasionally, flowers. Pandas live on bamboo shoots and other vegetation.
  • Koalas are much smaller than pandas.
  • Koalas are essentially grey in colour; pandas are distinctively black and white.
  • Koalas are endemic to Australia alone, meaning they are found only on the Australian continent. Pandas are endemic to parts of Asia.

Although squirrels and koalas are both tree-dwelling mammals, there is a great deal of difference between the two animals.

  • Squirrels are placental mammals, and koalas are not. Koalas are marsupials, and are not related to bears in any way. They are not "koala bears" - just "koalas".
  • Squirrels' young are born far more developed than koala joeys. Koala joeys are about the size of a bean when born, and must complete their development in the mother's pouch.
  • Koalas live almost exclusively on gum (eucalyptus) leaves and, occasionally, flowers. Squirrels have a more varied diet. As well as nuts, they feed on seeds, fruits, lichens, buds, mushrooms, pine cones and leaves.
  • There are approximately 278 species of squirrels (depending on the source one consults). There is just one species of koala.
  • Koalas are endemic to Australia alone, meaning they are found only on the Australian continent. Squirrels are natve to Africa, Eurasia and America.

It depends on the species of sloth, but generally, koalas are larger, both in length and mass.

Koalas in northern parts of Australia are smaller, with males growing to 74 cm and weighing 9 kg, and females growing to 72 cm and weighing 7.25 kg.

Southern koalas are larger. The males can grow to 82 cm and 15 kg whilst females can grow to 73 cm and 11 kg.

Sloths, on the other hand, vary more widely. Their body length averages 50-60cm, while eir mass can be anywhere from just over 2kg for an adult brown-throated sloth to 10 kg for an adult, female maned sloth.
