Charleston is a coastal city. It is built on the delta where the Ashley River and the Cooper River run into the Atlantic Ocean. Charleston is a major port city, with much shipping traffic.
The city and its harbor gained fame as the site where Confederate forces in April of 1861, launched an artillery barrage on Fort Sumter, and soon it was forced to surrender. This began the conflict which would be called the US Civil War. The Union had great problems in capturing the city.
