Diazepam (Common trade name of Valium) is a member of the Benzodiazepine family. Diazepam has many uses in both animal and human conditions, however it is often used as an anxiolytic, and has been used sucessfully for a number of years in both animals and humans. It can also be given to epileptic pets in suppository form if suffering from status epilepticus. As with any medication there are some potential side effects which must be discussed with your vet. In some rare cases, it may have a paradoxical effect in which it cause excitement and exacerbates anxiety. Diazepam should only be given to animals under veterinary advice. There are other products and formulations for pets that suffer from anxiety disorders that may be more suitable depending on severity of condition, size of the animal and other factors. Other formulations such as syrups, elixirs, and drops are commonly available in which your veterinarian can advise upon if suitable. There are also many natural alternatives that you may consider discussing with your veterinarian. If your pet goes for surgery and it has been given any kind of calming substance, even the most natural one, you must tell the veterinarian so the given anesthesia is adjusted (decreased) so the total anesthesia is within the therapeutic window, as calming subtances contribute to this total.

Xanax (alprazolam) and Valium (diazepam) along with other benzodiazepines are schedule IV controlled substances in The US, Canada, Australia, and under international law and convention. It is illegal to use a controlled substance for any purpose it was not prescribed for. It may only be used by the person the drug was specifically prescribed for. Although it is not manufactured in a specific veterinary formula, some vets do prescribe it "off label" although it is not FDA approved for use in dogs.

It is also important to note that although both diazepam and alprazolam are of the same class of drugs (benzodiazepines), they are different substances and should not be considered interchangeable without speaking to a physician.

In terms of bioequivalence in humans, 0.5 mg of oral alprazolam = 10 mg of oral diazepam.

There are also many other medications available, both benzodiazepine and non-benzodiazepine. Talk to your vet.

The conversion ratio of canines via the liver pathway is much less efficient than humans, therefor the oral dosage of diazepam for dogs is also more, mg to lb, than humans and is easy to remember- mg to lb. A ten lb dog requires 10 mg of valium, 20 lb dog 20 mg, etc.

you should never take any medication that is not prescribed for you. we all know this yet we all have done it at one time or another. but this specific medication is prescribed for severe anxiety or is used long term to control seizures. make sure you think about little Fido and what he may need this medication for, before you take it.

Diazepam is an anticonvulsant and muscle relaxer, not an itch-relieving medication, so the answer is none. You should never give your dog any medication without first consulting your veterinarian.

NO! Never give your dog human medications. Ask your Veterinarian to help you out if you are looking for a medication to help to calm your dog down for whatever reason. Better yet, take your pet into see your Veterinarian to have a check up done and talk to your Vet about why you need something like Valium for your dog. Maybe more excercise such as walks or socializing your dog would help. Enroll your dog in a local obedience class.

Could dogs take the same allergy medications as adults for there allergies?

Never give a dog a medicine meant for a human unless a veterinarian prescribes it. The dosage for a dog would be much lower than that for a human, and a human dose could kill a dog. Also some medicines for humans cannot be used for a dog.
