Italy is not where the western part of the Roman Empire fell. It was actually the part that survived the longest. Gaul, Iberia, Africa and Britannia were lost to invaders earlier. It was only the western part of the empire which fell, the eastern part of the empire continued for another 1,000 years.

It is not a coincidence that the Renaissance begun in the country which had been the heart of the Roman Empire. The Italians had already begun to look at the Roman Republic as an inspiration for the development of their system of governance for their city states when they became independent in the High Middle Ages. Some intellectuals looked back at the Roman days. Petrarch, the father of Humanism, held that the elites should read the Latin literature and rhetoric for their education. Roman models suited a the burgeoning urban commercial economy of Italy, which thrived by reestablishing trade routes in the Mediterranean which had been plied by the Romans.

Italy is the country with the strongest Roman heritage. When humanist scholars went to the monasteries around Europe to find the transcriptions of Roman writings which had been done by monks in the days of Charlemagne, they were retracing their heritage.

Renaissance sculpture was influenced by superb Roman reproductions of Greek statues which were discovered in Rome. Michelangelo and others studied them. Painters also studied them to learn to draw the human body. Brunelleschi studied the dome of the Pantheon before he built the dome of Florence Cathedral.

No, there's no way that it could be a coincidence. The Renaissance began roughly 800 years after the Roman empire fell. The word "renaissance" means "rebirth". It was a rebirth of the ancient knowledge and literature, and the rebirth and leap forward in the fields of art, invention and matters of the intellect.
