It really depends entirely on the individual animals. Typically, male dogs who haven't been fixed are more territorial than females, so based on that knowledge I would suggest a female. However, I have 2 male dogs and 1 female who all get along just fine in a house with a male cat. So, again, it just depends on the specific cat and dog.
