This in untrue. It is perfectly legal so long as you follow any mirror laws your particular state may have in place. Jeep Wranglers are designed from the factory with removable doors. The doors are neither structural or integral to the safety equipment of the Wrangler.

I don't know for sure where it is illegal, but I seriously doubt it, one standard thing all states want is side view mirrors though, you will need to get some relocation brackets and move them off the doors.As a rule, if a vehicle has a removable top, and was designed to be operated that way, you can also remove the doors if they too are meant to be removed.As long as you have functioning safety systems like brakes, mirrors, bumpers, seat belts, you will be fine.
I had both tops for my YJ, squared doors for the soft top and rounded for the hard top.
