It's called a meat pad and I was concerned when I did the same thing. I called the butcher and he said all this is is a packing material used to soak up blood while the meat is in the wrapper. There are no chemicals in it and it is still safe to eat the meat you cooked. I cooked my roast in a crock pot for 8hrs so I don't know if the time would have anything to do with it.
