Yet, this form of government proved to be useless and the Founding Fathers, among others, got together and created the Constitution in 1787. Once a state ratified the constitution, it was admitted to the Union. So since no state was admitted to the Union until 1787, 50 states have been admitted to the US since it became an independent country.
