Acetonitrile is unlikely to be more toxic than methanol, as the latter is extremely toxic. Acetonitrile, also known as methyl cyanide, is quite unlike the poison "cyanide", because the poison is a salt of hydrocyanic acid and has free cyanide ions in solution. Acetonitrile has no free cyanide ions. The breakdown products of acetonitrile / methyl cyanide will be acetic acid and ammonia, which will form harmless ammonium acetate. In the short term, however, acetonitrile like any other organic solvent will have narcotic effects, causing dizziness and drowsiness, and the solvent could kill in large enough amounts.

Methanol ("wood alcohol") is highly toxic. As little as 10 mL has been known to cause permanent blindness. 80 to 150 mL is usually fatal.

What hydrocarbon is CH3OH?

CH3OH, or methanol, is an organic compound. It is also known as wood alcohol and is both highly flammable and toxic.

Is methanol corrosive or irritant?

Methanol is toxic. In moderate quantities it causes blindness, and in larger quantities it causes death. You can describe it as an irritant but that is really an understatement.

What does Methanol do to your body?

Methanol is a very toxic compound; ingestion of great volumes lead to blindness and death. See the link below.

Why methanol not used in drinnk?

Methanol is found in very trace amounts in alcoholic beverages. It is far more toxic and flammable than ethanol; if used in drinks, it would cause blindness and even death.

Can you mix methanol and ammonia?

Ammonia is often mixed with methanol and water for industrial purposes. However, the mixture should be handled carefully as it is highly toxic, corrosive, and can cause long lasting health problems.

How does ethanol treat methanol poisoning?

Methanol isn't actually poisonous, but the chemicals produced when your body metabolises methanol are. The enzymes that metabolise methanol also metabolise ethanol, but when both are present the ethanol is processed first. Methanol is also removed from the body via the lungs, sweat glands and in urine. Giving ethanol prevents the toxic by products of metabolism whilst these other methods remove the methanol from their system. This treatment only works if given early. It does not reverse the the damage done by methanol that has already been metabolised.

Why should sodium methoxide 25 percent in methanol be kept tightly closed when not in use?

Firstly, sodium methoxide is extremely toxic, so you want to handle it carefully without ever spilling (e.g. from an unsealed container). Secondly, methanol is hygroscopic and will pick up lots of water from the atmosphere. Water will hydrolyze sodium methoxide into methanol and sodium hydroxide. You wouldn't want your methanol to evaporate either.

What 's in methyl alcohol?

Methanol formula: CH4O , mass 32 g/mole, toxic, highly flamable or more structural:H3C-OH

Why denurated alcohol has a strong odor?

Some additives with strong odor and toxic or colored are added (methanol, acetone, isopropyl alcohol, etc.) to avoid consumption by drunkmen.
