If a neuroendocrine tumor can be completely resected before it has metastasised, the patient can be cured. If the tumor has metastasised surgery is still the first defense. Patients are given octreatide therapy to alleviate symptoms and reduce tumor cell proliferation. A Ki-67 reading is taken from a biopsied tumor sample to determine the proliferation rate of the tumor. If the rate is <2% the tumor is slow-growing. Neuroendocrine tumors do not have an effective response to chemotherapy, which is more effective on fast growing cells.

Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy with Y-90 and Lu-177 is in Phase II trials in Europe, UK and Australia and is a promising new treatment. Novartis's RAD001 is also in Phase III trials and shows promise.
