Nicotine is a natural component of tobacco, but tobacco companies routinely "fortify" tobacco, especially in cigarettes, the better to addict their customers.

Nicotine is found naturally in tobacco. Were it not, tobacco would never have become popular to begin with.

There is quite enough poison in natural tobacco. Cigarette companies use many additives to manipulate flavor, nicotine content, and other characteristics of the tobacco product.

Tobacco products are used because people like the effect of nicotine, a vegetable poison found in tobacco and a number of other plants. The plants use it to repel bugs, and to discourage crowding by other kinds of plants. Burning tobacco also releases coal tars and other chemicals, a number of which are known carcinogens (cancer-causing chemicals).
