I don't know :) The Berlin Wall divided the Russian Zone of Berlin from the US British & French zones of occupation. The Iron Curtain divided the countries of the Warsaw Pact from the west. Effectively the Berlin Wall was a city wide section of the Iron Curtain.
No, the Berlin Wall & the walls & fences that the East Germans built were put up by communist East Germany, not the USSR. They were put up as means to force people to live under communist rule. The act of imperialism by the Soviet Union was that of creating communist governments in the places that it forcibly occupied & kept after the second world war, and then forcing these governments to repress its people and become satellite nations of the Soviet Union.
Pinard sat down and wept after chipping pieces off the Berlin Wall because the act symbolized the end of a painful era marked by division and oppression. Taking Berlin
Robert Darnton referred to the people dismantling the Berlin Wall as "conquerors" to highlight their role in overcoming oppressive regimes and reclaiming their freedom. The act of tearing down the wall symbolized a powerful victory over political oppression and the desire for reunification. This moment represented not just a physical act but also a profound shift in power dynamics and collective agency among the people. By calling them conquerors, Darnton emphasized the significance of their actions in shaping history.
