Yes and no, it is one of the poorest, but that is because of the low GDP (Gross domestic product). However; the poorest country in the world is Haiti. The Dominican Republic is adjacent to the country of Haiti, the landmass as a whole is called Hispaniola, it is bordered by two bodies of water, the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Ocean. The landmass is a continental rock.

One of the main reasons Haiti is poor is due to the hurricanes and other natural disasters that has crushed the economic core of Haiti, the government used the money to try and rebuild all that was lost only to become in trillions of dollars in debt. The most recent catastrophic event (which happened about 2 days ago) was the earthquake that occurred in the capital city of Haiti, Port-Au-Prince causing millions of deaths, leaving many homeless, and jobs. It also killed many important ambassadors and important people involved in the government of Haiti!!!

The Dominican Republic is not considered one of the world's poorest countries. It is classified as an upper-middle-income economy by the World Bank. However, poverty and inequality are still significant issues in the country, with a substantial portion of the population living below the poverty line.
