NO. I don"t know who the authors/editors of the Amplified Bible are. The Christian has always placed enormous stock in the Bible- as the Word of God. any tampering with scripture- this could be grave stuff. ( true, there is some paraphrasing in hymns based on passages-such as Whatsoever You Do.. but that is poetic license) Bible is powerful enough - does not need any particle accelerants such as ( amplifications). In f act In John"s gospel there are stern warnings that NO Man Shall Add or Detract ( that is edit or rewrite scriptures to suit his own theological beliefs. The warning stands. Do Not disturb.

AnswerThe above answer displays the misconceptions about scripture that many have. The only 'true' Bible (if that is the right word), of course, is the original - the Old Testament in Hebrew and Aramaic, and the New Testament in Greek. All other Bibles are translations, including the Latin Vulgate, the King James Version, and the Jerusalem Bible. The warning in John's gospel that no one should add or take away from the Bible has meant that subsequent translations into our own languages need to be true to the original and faithful to the word of God. Some translations (such at the New World Translation used by Jehovah's Witnesses) are regarded by most Bible scholars as notoriously bad. However, most modern translations are exceedingly good, and faithful to the original, and differ only in that the English language itself evolves over time and so newer translations are necessary. The 'Catholic' Bible is only different in the sense that it contains books that other Bibles regard as 'deuterocanonical' - ie whose background cannot be confirmed as well as the accepted scripturesof all denominations. Otherwise, all English translations of the Bible used by Catholics (as an example, The Jerusalem Bible) are sound and render the meaning of the Hebrew or Greek words into English in a faithful and reliable way.

The Amplified Bible attempts to take both word meaning and context into account in order to accurately translate the original text into English. The Amplified Bible does this through the use of explanatory alternate readings and amplifications to help the reader in understanding what the Scripture really says and to bring out any subtle nuances in the original Hebrew or Greek. Multiple English word equivalents to each key Hebrew and Greek word make clear and amplify meanings that may otherwise have been lost by the traditional translation methods.

So, the Amplified Bible is not 'the same' as the Catholic Bible in the sense that the words used in it are not always exactly the same as the Catholic Bible. This does not make it 'wrong' and the Catholic Bible 'right' no more than the Catholic Bible is 'wrong' and the Amplified 'right'. However, used in conjunction with the Catholic Bible (or any other good translation) means that the subtle meanings of the words read on the page can be clarified by the Amplified Bible so that misconceptions, such as those seen in the first answer, do not arise as a result.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe "Catholic Bible" is any Bible that contains all the books of the Bible and contains an Imprimatur from the local Bishop and an Nihil Obstat from the Diocesian censor. The amplied Bible is a protestant Bible (missing a sizeable chunk of the Old Testament) with various "amplifications" in it to make the text more understandable, it is put out by protestant Bible publishers.

Great heavens, no. The Catholic Bible is based on the Septuagint for the Old Testament - that is the Greek translation of the Bible that was used by nearly all Jews for over 400 years, and was the version used by Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ. The New Testament is based on the Greek and Latin versions of the New Testament as accepted by the Church at the end of the fourth century A.D.

.

The NIV Bible is based on Martin Luther's truncated Bible in which he threw out seven books of the Old Testament and took his Old Testament translation from the Masoretic text that the Jews formulated a century after Christ died when they were trying to deny Christianity. The New Testament tends to favor translations of various texts that favor a protestant understanding of Christianity.
