It is a Catholic translation, in virtue of the following qualities:

-- The books include in the New American Bible are those that are found in the Catholic canon of Scripture. Catholic bibles have seven more Old Testament books than Protestant bibles do.

One is called the Nihil Obstat, and the other is called the Imprimatur. They will be labeled thus in any Bible, Lectionary, Catechism, or other official book approved by the church. The Nihil Obstat and the Imprimatur are a declaration that a book or pamphlet is considered to be free from doctrinal or moral error. Nihil Obstat is the Latin term that means "Nothing hinders" [it from being printed]. The words by which the censor of books certifies that he has inspected a given work and finds therein nothing contrary to faith or good morals. The Imprimatur is a Latin term which literally means "let it be printed". The word by which a bishop or his delegate licenses a book for publication. There is also a Imprimi Potest which means "it may be printed", this is from a general, provincial or other prelate of a religious order or his delegate approving of the publication of a book by a member of that order. It is required in many order in addition to the episcopal licence - the imprimatur.
