Is this a manual transmission? If so, this is a pretty common problem for these cars. Probably going to have to replace the shifter cable. About $50 at Advance.
You can use any SAE certified transmission fluid in your Ford E1 50. I'm also all vehicle manufacturers use the same transmission fluid
I'd check the hose going to the 50 mph transmission lock up modulator first as it sounds like the likely culprit.
