I can't help much, except to say I have a painting by 'H L Koller' (a misty forest scene), which I purchased in Ottawa in 1987. The piece was in the stockroom of the gallery, and seemed quite underpriced at about $200. It was later appraised at about $2000 (not that I necessarily trust art appraisals). I think the artist lives in Niagara falls, Ont.

It depends on the artist's field. Photographer, painter, sculptor, illustrator? Advertising? Freelance or not?
Anyone can take a snapshot. Sometimes they turn out good enough. A photographer such as you are thiking about is an artist. He has the talent and experience to make a portrait of a person that is a work of art. If you want something really good, his work is worth the price.
Yes, anyone can make art. But not everyone can make a living as an artist.
Mostly it would be called a studio. An old fashioned photographer would also work in a darkroom.
