What battles took place in Italy to capture a monestary?

The only one of which I am aware was the battle for Monte Cassino in, I think, the Spring of 1944. When the Allies advanced north, they came against the strong defenses called the GUSTAV Line, which set up across the entrance of the Liri Valley and included the mountains on each side. The prominant mountain included the Monestary at Cassino and Castel Hill. The town of Cassino was at the base of this mountain. For almost 5 months the Allies tried to break through this German defensive position. The campaign is broken down into 3 attacks. The first attack began with the assault across the Gargilano and Rappido Rivers on 22 Jan 1944. The final breakthrough began with the spring assault on 11 May 1944, and resulted in the relief of Anzio and the liberation of Rome on 4 June.

What were the short term effects of the Battle of Monte Cassino?

It proved a huge boost to the moral of the German Military. A small group of German paratroopers were subjected to some of the worst air bombing and Artilllary bombardment of ww2, and still managed to hold up the allied advance in Southern Italy for over 4 months. The 200 German Paratroopers defeatd 3 separate Campaigns mounted against them. The fourth Attempt finally proved successful. What were the effects D-Day?

I know of one effect and that is that now the allies now have another way to get to the German forces.* The allies pushed through France towards the German border, proving that the German war machine was not invincible. The war started coming to its end in the European theater. Many soldiers lost there lives on D-day and during the months after. The German forces were defeated when Germany become surrounded by the Allies with the Russians to the south, and the British, Americans, and the Canadians to the south. D-day was the start of the end of the war in Europe.

What were the political conditions in Europe during World War 2?

Contiditions were certainly better than in World War 1. The morale of the army was a greater consideration than in the trench warfare of 1914-1918. At the begining of the war the French army were stationed in heavily fortified deences along the border with Germany with underground hospitals and railways linking their positions. For the German army being stationed in the West was a luxury compared to the Eastern Front. After the Allies invaded Normandy there was a period of tough fighting for around 3 months before a significant portion of the German Army was surrounded and the Germans retreate back to the Rhine. The toughest conditions for soldiers fighting in Europe were in Italy, especially around Monte Cassino. The German army here were much stronger than the troops stationed on the defenses of the Atlantic wall and the terrain and weather made the allied advance much more difficult. It took 9 months for the Allies to reach Rome after they landed in Italy and less than 3 months to liberate Paris and reach the German border, only lack of supplies especially fuel prevented them from going even further.
