The 1998 Ford Escort starter motor is located on the rear of the engine. The starter motor will be on the right hand side, near the bottom of the motor.
The starter motor is located between the transmission and the engine which engages the starter clutch with the flywheel, which rotates and starts the engine.
There is no starter relay on an Escort. The main battery positive cable goes directly to the starter. A small wire with a clip on it marked s goes to the solenoid. The main battery current to the starter is supplied with this solenoid.
I don't own a 95 ford escort. But if I did, and the motor turned over but would not start, I'd look at either the ignition module or fuel pump first.

The starter is located right under the exhaust manifold, front of motor and right in the middle.
Bottom front of motor between the radiator and engine block
The ignition modual is in the front of the engine compartment, below the front manafold between the motor and the radiator above the starter
directions to change the motor mounts?
its right at the front in the middle hidden by the power steering pipes, and it is a pig to get to!
I have a 1996 ford escort that will not start and it has a new starter on it and a new battery in it but it still will not start
A 97 lx doesn't have a starter relay. The relay is built into the solenoid of the starter motor itself. It uses light voltage to transfer the power from the main cable to the starter motor itself.
starter is on the right side ( passenger side ) of motor.
The starter is just a DC motor so the motor gets dirty inside or the armature and brushes wear. If the battery is good and yet you just hear a click or nothing or even the starter spinning, the next most likely cause is the starter motor. They are cheap to replace yourself, though the job is a little tight. See wikianswer on 1993 Ford Escort for the process.
The starter is on the front of the engine, behind the motor mount.
3.0 V6 (1999-2003): The starter motor is located behind the front exhaust pipe toward the driver's side of the oil filter. Are there pictures on removing it .
