Safely remove wheel and support vehicle Remove cotter pin (its the thing that prevents the nut that looks like a castle from unscrewing) Remove castle nut- if the stud keeps turning then you must pry tie rod into or away from steering knucke at same time you loosen nut to remove if you do not have impact gun. If the tie rod doesn't come out of steering knuckle which is very likely you must hit steering knuckle with a large hammer. You will repeatly strike the steering knuckle only, not the tie rod- it is a left and right swing, not up and down. Don't be afraid of striking it too hard and a hammer for driving nails into wood is too light. before removing the tie rod from steering knucke take an open end wrench and loosen the nut that is right behind the outer tie rod (it is on the threads of the inner tie rod) with open end wrench or vice grips hold the inner tie rod in place and count how many times you unscrew outter tie rod when removing Applying anti-seize wouldn't hurt before installing new tie rod Screw new tie rod on as many turns as you removed old one- this will help keep your alignment correct. Tighten up all the parts you loosened and don't overtighten the new castle nut. Use the new cotter pin not the old one, and if there is a grease fitting you must add grease until you see rubber boot move (from filling with grease) Make sure lug nuts are tight and you should get an alignment

How do you replace the inner tie rod on 2000 Nissan maxima?

You need an inner tie rod tool. Looks like a pipe with a drive socket on one end, and a receiver on the other. Unbolt the outer tie rod from the knuckle, and loosen the lock nut on the rod. Either use a puller to remove the outer end, or hit the knuckle with a hammer, and remove the outer end from the knuckle. Unscrew the outer from the inner rod. [break the lock nut loose before removing the outer from the knuckle, or you will not be able to loosen it] Remove the bellows from the rack and inner rod. Use a drift or punch and a hammer to push the lock plate off the inner rod end. Place the correct adapter over the inner rod end, slide the rod inside the tool, and lock the receiver end of the tool on to the adapter. place a ratchet on the drive end of the tool, and remove the rod.

Is it an inner or an outer tie rod. If it's an outer, than you loosen the jam nut on the tie rod, undo the tie rod end from the strut or steering arm/spindle or whatever it's connected to. And count how many times you turn it on removal, then install the new one and do the same in reverse, count the turns on installation so you have a similar alignment by the end
