Check the timing belt Answer - My 99 Protege was leaking out coolant slowly out of the water pump. A seal on it had gone bad and the pump needed to be replaced. Haven't had a leak or an overheat since new pmp was installed.
Would suggest checking the ignition timing as this can cause overheating if not set correctly
Not sure if these have one but it could be a bad thermostat.
Sounds like you could have a low water/anti freeze level, bad thermostat, or clogged radiator or clogged engine passages. Usually if the thermostat is causing the overheating it is stuck in the closed position and the car will overheat within a few minutes after starting it.
check your thermostat and if its opening up then you have a blown head gasket
rad. cap
That would be the thermostat.
Not sure about the battery light, but the overheating is most likely a stuck closed thermostat. You may test the thermostat to verify if it is working by starting the engine while it is relatively cool. Hold the upper radiator hose toward the radiator as the engine warms up. Periodically check the temp gauge to prevent overheating. If the thermostat is working properly, the upper radiator hose should get quite hot and feel pressurized as the temperature gauge rises into the normal zone. If the guage starts to read hot and you have not felt a distinct temperautre increase in the hose, the thermostat is sticking closed. Also, make sure the thermostat installed is the correct rating for your enigne and that it is not installed backwards. The pellet on the thermostat goes toward the engine. When replacing a thermostat, make sure and replace the gasket as well.
The cat convertors get quite hot. You might try installing another heat shield above it.
check the fan or the water pump belt it may be broken if not the thermostat may be stuck you may need to replace it
Have you checked the computer codes? If so, what do they say?
The thermostat is probably stuck in the open position.
ask your service station to do a compression test. I had the same problem and replaced all sensors and thermostat but after the test it was found out that there was a crack in the housing holding the thermostat
