Best Answer

Benito Mussolini viewed socialism and pacifism with disdain, because both socialism and pacifism are generally opposed to the concepts of nation-states due to their internationalist character, and both are opposed to nationalism and class-collaboration for the sake of promoting national unity.

Mussolini had contempt for democracy as well because he felt that liberal democracy led to a weak national leadership and corruption because politicians were preoccupied with being elected and re-elected, making them susceptible to bribery and placing their narrow short-term interests before the national interest.

This answer would not be complete, however, unless it was stated that before Mussolini became a fascist, he was a socialist. He even edited a socialist newspaper.

His change of heart may have been directly related to the Bolshevik revolution. The revolution caused many ordinary people in Italy to fear socialism.

First of all, Italy never ( in the period of Mussolini) had a democracy as we understand it, from l86l-l946 it was a Kingdom and for a while technically an Empire. There were some democratic features to the Chamber of Deputies ( not a police congress!) but well the Fascist leader felt democracy ( despite the fact it was never really tried in his country, did not work, imposed a Big Brother type of over-Governmental control on Italy- fascists essentially a centrally controled Police state- but maintained the external structure of the Monarchy. There were a number of people even in the United States ( such as writer Sidney Sheldon) who favored- he used Religion as a background- some form of powerful central government militating against various vices such as alcohol and pornography. Incidentally an early censorship target of Mussolini was comic books and comic strips- Barney Google was banned as it was making fun of the Royal Family ( in the Defense minister:s head) Hut-2-3-4 rather than let"s take a vote. well that"s about the size of it.

Mussolini was contemptuous of democracy. He didn't think that the majority, just because it was the majority, was qualified to successfully lead the state.
