My 2004 Nissan altima makes a knocking sound when I start it up. When I drive it maks a rattling noise. Is this a transmission problem?

Sounds more like a lack of oil or oil circulation problem. I hope you are not one that races the engine to hear how good it sounds. Flush the engine, change the oil and filter and never race a cold engine to warm it up. The rattling may be worn out lifters. Now pray. lol

I had a problem with the shift lock and the problem ended up being the brake solenoid. This is a brake switch that in forms the transmission that you have your foot on the brake. If you don't heat a click when you push on the brake, I would have that checked.
