You are too "light" on the specific details. If it was my car "grinding" on cornering in the rear I would strongly suspect the wheel bearing on the "grinding" side. If you jack the car up, and safely support it with a stand, you should be able to feel the play in a wheel bearing by giving the wheel an attempted wiggle, at different spots around the outside, there should be 0 (none) play. BUT there is a lot of stuff going on there that might generate noise. You do not say if you have an auto, or standard, transmission. Auto transmissions in these cars can suffer from a condition called "torque bind", where the driving coupling between the front and back is not operating properly. You may see your "power" light (bottom of your speedo) flash on cold start-up (it should be on, but then turn off, not flash, when starting) this is your transmission running a self-diagnostic and finding fault when it flashes. This is a "nasty" condition that can be caused by as little as a poor electrical connection, or as much as the entire tail section of your transmission. (maybe that "solenoid" you mention?) Sometimes putting a 15 amp fuse in the FWD connector (passenger side, facing up, on the firewall, near the top, clearly marked "FWD") can eliminate the noise (and the condition) until you can get it fixed. Article here: http://legacycentral.org/library/torquebind.htm Many of these cars have a limited slip differential, that are slightly noisier than a conventional differential, if you suspect a problem with the differential it might be a good idea to drain it into a glass container and inspect the oil for metal, refilling with fresh Subaru fluid. For some reason the upper rear strut mounts can go "bad" on these cars. I have no idea why, but the noise associated with a bad strut mount would be a squeak (starting to fail), or thump (total failure), rather than a "grind". The availaible after market parts don't fit, this is a "dealer only" part.
