On my 95 Z28 (with Automatic Transmission), there is a solenoid which releases the shifter button when the brake is pressed so the car can only start with the transmission in park. When the solenoid starts to go bad, it tends to not release in colder weather. I was able to get around this problem by using by hand to lifting up on the solenoid (or by rotating it) while pressing on the brake (perhaps the solenoid shaft binds from ware in the old orientation). I used a piece of wire to lift up on the solenoid by tying it to a nearby bracket, which fixed the problem for now.
Check the brake switch on the brake pedal, if the switch is bad or a fuse is blown, the shifter will not release.
If you are unable to press in the button to move the shifter. Replaces the brake switch connected to the brake pedal.
If it is stuck in park it is most likely the brake lock switch on most cars there's a cable and switch at the shifter from the brake pedal when you push on the brake pedal the switch pulls out and unlocks the shifter so you can shift the car out of park. Some cars have a little slot by the shifter where you can insert a key to unlock the shifter.
Try to have your Neutral Safety switch checked out or your brake switch, It controls the shifter so you cant put it in gear without pressing the brake
Check fuses, and check the shifter lock switch on the brake pedal.
Check and see if you have brake lights - If there are no brake lights then your shifter release solenoid will not release the shifter, it will be stuck in park. If this has happened then please check the wiring on the brake light switch which is located on the brake pedal. You will probably find a broken wire.
Possibly the brake light switch is bad. I had a recall on a Ford Taurus that spoke of this problem. The brake light switch releases a solenoid that holds the shifter in park.
Check to see if Brake lamps work when brake pedal is pressed. If not gear shifter is locked for safety so replace fuse or repair brake lamp switch.
Brake light switch stuck, defective, or out of adjustment.Brake light switch stuck, defective, or out of adjustment.
check your brake light fuse
the shifter lock out switch is in the brake, remember how you couldn't pull it out if park with out hiting the brakes my 96 sephia had this problem and we replaced the nutrel safety switch and the shifter lock thing on the brake pedel in side the car good luck. Also, you may have broken the gear cable. You will need to examine the shifter and make sure the cable is still attached.
The brake light switch on top of the brake pedal. to temp. fix this if you are stuck some place.on the right side of shifter at the base of the console is a slot. find something solid that will fit down in side and there is a button to push down. as you push the button, depress shifter button and the shifter will release out of park.
