They were not called anything. Before the land was colonized it was in the hands of various Native American tribes. For the most part the "states" name, is what the colony name was. For example Pennsylvania.... Is the colony name... Penn's Woods. New York, New Jersey.... were named by the people who settled (colonized) the area, they were from York and Jersey.
