The Western states and their capitals, as defined by the Census Bureau, are...

  • Alaska - Juneau
  • Hawaii - Honolulu
  • Washington - Olympia

  • Arizona - Phoenix
  • New Mexico - Santa Fe
  • Colorado - Denver
  • Utah - Salt Lake City
  • Nevada - Carson City
  • Idaho - Boise
  • Montana - Helena

However, in reality, all Western states would be considered states west of the Mississippi. This would include all states listed above in addition to..

  • North Dakota - Bismarck
  • South Dakota - Pierre
  • Nebraska - Lincoln
  • Kansas - Topeka
  • Oklahoma - Oklahoma City
  • Texas - Austin
  • Minnesota - Minneapolis
  • Iowa - Des Moines
  • Missouri - Jefferson City
