Best Answer
  • Over- fishing
  • Water pollution
  • Global warming
  • Excess CO2 in the atmosphere
  • Shipping navigating through the reef, and resultant shipping accidents
  • Excessive tourism activity on the Reef
  • Chemical run-off from farms - pesticides and fertilisers
  • Farming activities increase acidic sediment as well
  • Changing water quality on the reef, due to human interference - quality such as salinity, nutrients and increased sediment concentration
  • Rising sea temperatures (different to the debatable global warming, which is not necessarily due to human activities, but entirely possibly part of a natural cycle - coral cannot handle even mild increases in temperature)

What kinds of effects can harm the great barrier reef eally really badly?

Like most habitats, human activities (usually pollution, oil spills etc.) can harm them. This also applies to the Great Barrier Reef because water pollution can harm them. Things like oils spills, garbage disposal in water, and too much boating activities will pollute the water and poison the coral reefs. This will not just kill the coral reefs but also will kill the marine animals that where dependent of the reefs. Also the Great Barrier Reef is a popular tourist site so inconsiderate people may be "abusing" it. How are they "abusing" it? People who may be visiting this site may pull one out and such. I hoped this helped. If not please apologize, Im just a grade 9 student. Right?

Nevertheless, it is still an extremely vulnerable ecosystem, and remains threatened.
