Connect a timing light to the car battery. Attach the clamps to the number 1 spark plug and shine the timing light on the pulley connected to the crankshaft. Note where the timing mark on the pulley is compared to the degree tab. Loosen the distributor lock-down bolt at the base of the housing and disconnect the hose. Rotate the distributor with your hand until the timing mark aligns at 12 degrees.
The timing mark is a line that goes across the harmonic balancer that should line up with the mark on the timing chain cover. It is on the drivers side on the bottom of the timing cover.
You have 3 engines. I assume you have the largest. This is weird. There is a paint color on the new chain that mates a dot on the cam gear and a color that matches a dot on the crank shaft gear.
Line the mark on the crank pulley up with the mark on the timing cover, and line the distributor rotor up with the mark on the pickup plate.
Unless you are putting on a new timing belt ,you do not set the timing on the car ,it is completely controlled by the onboard computer, if you are going to put a new timing chain on then post that you need the settings for that and i will try and find the diagram for you and the timing mark, i have it written down somewhere here in my notes , i had to repalce the belt or chain, per say and then and only then do u need to adjust the mark, after that its all pc stuff,
Honda Man There are two timing belts. This is best answered with a diagram.
You don't say what year this is, but all the later ones are computer controlled and there is no timing adjustment.
Look at your battery. There's a red terminal with a positive mark on it (+). That's positive. The black terminal with the negative mark (-) is the one you want.
There is no advance for a 1998 Dodge 5.2. You just set the distributor at the mark on TDC and the computer takes care of the rest. It is set to 0 degrees with a scan tool. It can not be done with a timing light.
